Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS):
- For healthcare providers who respond to emergencies in infants and children and for personnel in emergency response, emergency medicine, intensive care and critical care units
What does this course teach?
The PALS Provider Course aims to improve outcomes for pediatric patients by preparing healthcare providers to effectively recognize and intervene in patients with respiratory emergencies, shock, and cardiopulmonary arrest by using high‐performance team dynamics and high‐quality individual skills. The course includes a series of case scenario practices with simulations that reinforce important concepts. Upon successful completion of all the patient cases, students must pass the multiple-choice exam with a minimum score of 84%. Topics include:
After successfully completing this course, students will be able to
- Perform high‐quality cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) per American Heart Association (AHA) basic life support (BLS) recommendations
- Differentiate between patients who do and do not require immediate intervention
- Recognize cardiopulmonary arrest early and begin CPR within 10 seconds
- Apply team dynamics
- Differentiate between respiratory distress and failure
- Perform early interventions for respiratory distress and failure
- Differentiate between compensated and decompensated (hypotensive) shock
- Perform early interventions for the treatment of shock
- Differentiate between unstable and stable patients with arrhythmias
- Describe clinical characteristics of instability in patients with arrhythmias
- Implement post–cardiac arrest management
Goal: By registering Update PALS course you understand the need for significant pre-course preparation, and understand that without adequate pre-course preparation you may not successfully complete the PALS course.
To Prepare:
- Complete a BLS Providers (2015) course or be able to perform high-quality CPR and use and AED according to the 2015 AHA Guidelines for CPR and ECC.
- Understand the 10 cases in the PALS Provider (2015) Manual
- Understand the PALS algorithms for the cases in the PALS Provider Manual
- Complete the PALS Precourse self-assessment on PALS ECG's and Pharmacology
Bring to Class:
- PALS Provider (2020) Manual -- ACCESS Employees can check out from the library
- PALS PRETEST - click HERE to take prestest
- Any student that comes to class without pre-test will not be allowed to attend
- PALS pretest passing score is 70%
- Pen or pencil writing notes
NOTE: All ACCESS employees' AHA certification records will be verified. If not valid, the employee will receive an email informing them of what their options are. ACCESS employees are EXEMPT from the cost (unless otherwise noted)

Each licensed Paramedic in the ACCESS system shall maintain PALS Certification (Failure to maintain cerification will result in suspension of credentials an this level of a medical provider in the ACCESS system.) ACCESS employees are EXEMPT from the cost of a renewal course, if expired the ACCESS employee will cover the cost of the online course
